For anyone considering taking part in this retreat to help with Spanish - DO IT! As a Puerto Rican who grew up hearing/understanding Spanish but for some reason never speaking it - there is a sense of shame and embarrassment that comes with not speaking and being a “no sabo” kid. And that alone has prevented me from even trying because of fear that I would make a mistake and look foolish. This retreat provided a safe space to learn and grow without shame or embarrassment. Kerry is an AMAZING teacher and she’s created a wonderful online community of people who all have the same goal. And during this trip I got to meet some of these people and they’re truly amazing helpers, encouragers, and cheerleaders. If you want to grow in your Spanish comprehension and your speaking - this is the place to do it! You’ll be surprised at how much growth can happen in just one week when you’re immersed in the language and surrounded by people who want to see you grow.

Our inaugural Puerto Rican Spanish Immersion Retreat in Ponce, Puerto Rico was a vibrant, hands-on experience that aimed to bring language and culture to life. Each day featured conversation classes, plus unforgettable activities like a Bomba class, a cooking workshop, a tour of colorful Ponce, and a deep dive into the particulars of the language of Puerto Rico with Dialecto Boricua. We topped it off with some community-centered events including a visit to Casa Pueblo, a beach clean-up, and a beach day under the sun.
